These beautifully carved cups originate in Scandinavia and the word Kuksa is the Finnish name for them. Each cup we offer is carved from a birch tree burr. Burrs yield a very peculiar and highly figured wood, prized for its beauty and rarity. It is sought after by furniture makers, artists, and wood sculptors. Burr wood is very hard to work with hand tools because its grain is twisted and interlocked. This "wild grain" makes burl wood extremely dense and resistant to splitting. Due to their hardy nature and rarity, kuksas made from wood burr are more expensive than those made from the less hardy straight grain woods.
Each cup measures approximately 8cm in diameter and 6cm in height.
So, what are the benefits of using a wooden cup? A kuksa is pretty sturdy and will accept some rough handling - ideal for outdoor pursuits. Also, wood is a great insulator and you will be unlikely to burn your hands when holding a kuksa with a hot drink. However, the wood will warm your hands on a chilly day especially as the two finger handle allows you to hold your cup snuggly. Equally, on a chilly day the wood cup's inherent warmth will not chill your fingers.
As with any wooden culinary item these cups are not dishwasher or detergent friendly but the good news is that they may be cleaned simply by rinsing out with clean water and dried.
Each kuksa can be personalised on the base with up to 4 characters. This personalisation will be burned into the cup's base creating a lasting memento.
